Mangosteen

Description

Mangosteen is a prized tropical fruit known for its unique sweet and tangy flavor. The fruit has a thick, dark purple rind with a glossy surface and a soft, white, segmented flesh inside. Each segment of the flesh has a slightly sweet, citrusy flavor with a hint of tartness, often described as a combination of peach, strawberry, and pineapple. The flesh is juicy and tender, and some segments may contain small seeds.

Mangosteen is typically eaten fresh by breaking open the thick rind to reveal the fruit inside. It’s highly valued in Vietnamese cuisine as a refreshing snack or dessert, and its unique flavor profile makes it a favorite among both locals and tourists.

The mangosteen season in Vietnam usually runs from May to August, with regions like the Mekong Delta, especially Can Tho and Vinh Long, being major producers of this fruit. Mangosteen is also known for its health benefits, as it is rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, and fiber. The fruit is sometimes referred to as the "queen of fruits" in Southeast Asia, complementing the durian, which is called the "king of fruits."
